The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has officially launched a new £50 million Defence Growth Deal for South Yorkshire, aiming to transform the region into a global powerhouse for cutting-edge military research and advanced manufacturing.

Announced by Defence Minister Luke Pollard during a visit to the University of Sheffield, the deal is a direct response to the Strategic Defence Review’s commitment to innovation. It’s designed to ensure the UK Armed Forces are equipped with the next generation of high-tech hardware, developed right here in Britain.

The “Targeted Funding” Approach

South Yorkshire isn’t just getting a cash injection; it’s getting a specific mission: targeted funding to catalyse growth across the region by boosting innovative R&D capacity and reinforcing the supply chains that defence companies need to equip our Armed Forces.

By expanding R&D capacity at institutions like the University of Sheffield’s AMRC (Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre), the deal aims to:

  • Reinforce Supply Chains: Making sure the “bits and pieces” needed for the front line are made in the UK.
  • Boost Innovation: Helping small defence tech companies cut through red tape to get their ideas into the hands of soldiers.
  • Create High-Value Jobs: Supporting the 3,200 defence jobs already in the region and creating hundreds more.

A Regional Engine for Growth

Yorkshire and the Humber already benefit from nearly £1 billion a year in defence spending. This new deal is about “staying near and going far”—giving engineers in Sheffield, Rotherham, and Doncaster the chance to work on world-leading technology without having to move south.

Major facilities such as the MOD-owned Sheffield Forgemasters and BAE Systems’ advanced artillery factory complement defence SMEs, contributing to growth in the region and producing vital kit that keeps Britain safe now and in the future, including howitzer gun barrels and steel for the Dreadnought-class next-generation submarines.

Defence Minister Luke Pollard highlighted that this is about more than just money: “This investment will mean South Yorkshire’s superb defence companies can develop innovative new technology, helping strengthen our Armed Forces and keep Britain safe in this new era of threat.”
