In a major boost for UK air power and industrial resilience, the Ministry of Defence has awarded a massive £879 million contract to Boeing Defence UK. The three-year deal is designed to do one thing: ensure that the British Army’s Apache attack helicopters and the RAF’s Chinook heavy-lift fleet are mission-ready at a moment’s notice.
Announced by Minister for Defence Readiness and Industry, Luke Pollard, during a visit to the Army Aviation Centre at Middle Wallop, this contract represents a strategic shift in how the UK maintains its most important rotary-wing assets.

The “Rotary Wing Enterprise”: A New Way of Working

For the first time, support for both the Apache and the Chinook is being brought together under a single arrangement known as the Rotary Wing Enterprise.
By consolidating these two massive programs, the MOD is aiming to:

  • Slash Red Tape: Reducing duplication in maintenance schedules and spare parts logistics.
  • Maximise Efficiency: Ensuring that “lessons learned” on one fleet can be applied to the other.
  • Deliver Value: Getting more flying hours for every pound spent by the taxpayer.

Securing 1,200 Jobs Across the UK

This isn’t just about aircraft; it’s about the highly skilled engineers and apprentices who keep them in the air. The contract secures 1,200 jobs across the UK:

  • 700 roles at Boeing sites, including Middle Wallop, Wattisham, Odiham, Bristol, Gosport, and Yeovil.
  • 500 roles across the wider supply chain, including 300 jobs at StandardAero in Fleet, Hampshire.

The Aircraft: Why They Matter in 2026

  • The Apache: Our primary “Hunter.” These are one of the world’s most advanced attack helicopters, providing the lethal punch needed to support troops on the ground.
  • The Chinook: The “Workhorse.” Whether it’s moving heavy artillery or extracting casualties, the Chinook is the backbone of UK military logistics. Without them, the military simply doesn’t move.

Sir Jeremy Quin, President of Boeing UK & Ireland, said:

This contract highlights the UK Government’s commitment to maintaining a world-class rotary wing capability and strengthening the country’s defence industrial base. It will help ensure our armed forces remain equipped to meet both current and future operational challenges with confidence and resilience.
