In a move that signals a massive escalation in the electronic warfare landscape, Defence Secretary John Healey has announced the UK’s largest-ever drone package for Ukraine. This record-breaking commitment will see at least 120,000 drones delivered by the end of this year, a “surge” designed to blunt Russian aggression as the conflict enters its fifth year.

This announcement came before todays Ukraine Defence Contact Group meeting in Berlin; this package isn’t just about numbers; it’s about a fundamental shift in how the UK is powering the Ukrainian counter-offensive.

What’s in the Box?

The 120,000-unit figure covers a wide spectrum of “battle-proven” technology already making an impact on the front lines. The package includes:

  • Long-Range Strike Drones: Capable of reaching deep behind enemy lines to disrupt logistics and command centres.
  • Intelligence & Reconnaissance (ISR) Drones: Providing real-time “eyes in the sky” for Ukrainian artillery and infantry.
  • Logistics Drones: Specialised for delivering supplies to forward-operating bases where traditional transport is too risky.
  • Maritime Capabilities: Further strengthening Ukraine’s ability to contest the Black Sea.

A Boost for British Industry

Crucially for our readers following the UK defence sector, the majority of this investment is being spent directly with UK-based innovators. The Ministry of Defence specifically highlighted three key players:

  1. Tekever: Experts in high-end surveillance and maritime monitoring.
  2. Windracers: Known for their heavy-lift, autonomous “ultra-low-cost” transport drones.
  3. Malloy Aeronautics: The team behind the T400 heavy-lift drones that have become iconic for battlefield resupply.

This isn’t just aid; it’s a massive R&D injection into the British drone sector, creating jobs from Belfast to the South Coast.

The “Electronic Shield”

The announcement comes as Russia ramps up its own drone warfare, launching an estimated 6,500 one-way attack drones in March 2026 alone. The UK’s “Drone Coalition” (led alongside Latvia) is now the primary counter-weight to this threat.

Beyond drones, the Defence Secretary also confirmed the UK will provide:

  • Hundreds of thousands of artillery rounds.
  • Thousands of air defence missiles (building on the £500m package announced in February).

This follows the new world-leading defence partnership, agreed last month, that will see the UK and Ukraine work together to boost global defensive capability against the proliferation of low-cost, high-tech military hardware, including drones.
