NATO Operations | NATO Air Policing Romania
Personnel from the Royal Air Force’s 121 Expeditionary Air Wing (EAW) have formally assumed responsibility for NATO’s Enhanced Air Policing mission in Romania following a handover ceremony at the 86th Air Base, Borcea.
The ceremony, held on March 31, 2026, marks the official start of the UK’s four-month contribution to Operation Biloxi 2026. This deployment supports NATO’s “Eastern Sentry” vigilance activity, a mission focused on securing the Alliance’s eastern flank and the Black Sea region.
Transition of Power
The RAF detachment succeeds an outgoing German Eurofighter contingent. This transition underscores the high level of interoperability between NATO allies, ensuring a seamless “24/7” defensive posture.
Key mission components include:
- Quick Reaction Alert (QRA): RAF Typhoon FGR4 aircraft from 3 (Fighter) Squadron are now on standby to identify, monitor, and intercept any unidentified or uncoordinated aircraft approaching NATO airspace.
- Joint Training: Pilots and ground crew will conduct integrated training exercises alongside the Romanian Air Force to enhance tactical coordination.
- Agile Combat Employment: The mission demonstrates the RAF’s ability to rapidly project air power and operate from varied, expeditionary locations.
Over A Decade of Support
The United Kingdom has been a consistent supporter of NATO Air Policing in Romania since 2014. This latest rotation continues that ten-year commitment to regional security at a time of heightened vigilance.
Regional Vigilance
Operating under the coordination of a Combined Air Operations Centre, the RAF deployment provides a visible deterrent against threats. By maintaining a credible and capable presence on the eastern border, the mission ensures the ongoing safety and integrity of Euro-Atlantic airspace.
