The UK and France have announced they will co-host a high-level multinational meeting on Tuesday, 12th May 2026, aimed at establishing a coordinated maritime security mission in the Strait of Hormuz.

This diplomatic push follows a period of heightened tensions in the region and focuses on safeguarding international shipping lanes. To support this initiative, the Royal Navy has confirmed that the Type 45 destroyer HMS Dragon is being pre-positioned to the Middle East, ensuring the UK is ready to contribute to the mission as soon as it is formalised.

The London Meeting: A Multinational Response

The core objective of the upcoming meeting is to gather over 40 international partners to discuss the formation of a defensive maritime security mission. The talks will focus on creating a framework to protect commercial vessels and ensure the “unfettered flow of trade” through the Strait of Hormuz—a waterway essential to global energy supplies.

HMS Dragon: Defensive Superiority

While the mission is diplomatic and defensive in nature, the deployment of HMS Dragon provides the necessary technical backbone. The destroyer recently completed rigorous training at a NATO facility off Crete, where the crew proved their readiness through live-fire exercises and complex combat simulations.

As a Type 45 destroyer, HMS Dragon is a world leader in air defence. Her capabilities include:

  • The Sea Viper System: Specifically designed to defend against sophisticated aerial threats, including supersonic missiles and drones.
  • Multitarget Tracking: Her SAMPSON radar can track hundreds of objects simultaneously, providing a “protective bubble” over hundreds of miles of sea.
  • Maritime Force: Beyond air defence, the ship carries a Wildcat helicopter and is armed with 4.5-inch and 30mm guns to counter surface-level threats, making her ideally suited for the varied challenges of the Strait.

Defence Secretary John Healey MP said:

“The UK is leading this multinational, defensive mission because trade, energy, and economic security for working people here at home depend on it.

We are turning diplomatic agreement into practical military plans to restore confidence for shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. When I co-chair this meeting of nations from around the world, our job will be to make sure we are not just talking, we are ready to act.

That is why I have directed HMS Dragon to the Middle East, so Britain is in position to support this mission the moment it is needed. This government will not stand by when instability drives up costs for British families and businesses. We will give people hope for the future by securing Britain and our national interests..”

Allied Dispatch Viewpoint

By pre-positioning HMS Dragon, the UK is ensuring that diplomatic words are supported by immediate operational capability.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a primary choke point for the global economy; any disruption there has immediate worldwide consequences. The presence of an air-defence asset like HMS Dragon demonstrates a serious commitment to upholding the freedom of navigation. It is a proactive stance that seeks to prevent conflict through deterrence and international cooperation.
