The Ministry of Defence has signed new contracts worth £36 million to supply hundreds more Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMM) to the UK Armed Forces.
The investment is designed to replenish national stockpiles and directly reinforce the air defence capabilities protecting British personnel, bases, and international allies across the Middle East.
Key Operational Details
- The Procurement: Placed by the National Armaments Director Group, this latest £36 million contract follows a previous order for the same munitions.
- Timeline: Deliveries are scheduled to commence in the coming months and will continue throughout the year to ensure constant operational readiness.
- Industrial Impact: The contract backs the domestic defence sector by supporting approximately 700 highly skilled engineering and manufacturing roles at the Thales facility in Belfast, where the missiles are designed and produced.
Battle-Proven Against Drone Threats
The Lightweight Multirole Missiles have already seen extensive deployment and high success rates in active operational theatres:
- Over 100 Drones Neutralised: The munitions have been central to countering aerial threats in the Middle East. This includes successful engagements by RAF Regiment gunners utilising the Rapid Sentry air defence kit.
- Maritime & Overseas Security: The LMM fleet is also deployed by Royal Navy Wildcat helicopters, operating from British bases in Cyprus to secure regional airspace and maritime assets.
Strategic Context
The acquisition is part of a broader, systemic effort by the Ministry of Defence to build resilience into sovereign ammunition supply chains, enabling the UK to sustain extended, high-tempo operations alongside coalition partners.
The UK maintains a robust defensive posture in the region, with more than 1,000 personnel currently deployed across the Middle East—supported by advanced fast jet squadrons and specialist counter-drone teams.
Government Statements
Defence Secretary John Healey MP stated:
“Our UK defence industry is the backbone of our Armed Forces. This is our new partnership with industry in action. We’re getting UK-built kit into the hands of our forces faster as we support good skilled jobs and drive growth across the UK.
These interceptor missiles are battle-proven – successfully used in action by our RAF sharp shooters over recent months. With these LMMs, our dedicated Armed Forces will continue to keep the UK and our partners more secure in the Middle East and beyond.”
