MIDDLE EAST | Operational Update

In a significant shift for regional security, NATO has confirmed that it has completed the relocation of all NATO Mission Iraq (NMI) personnel from the Middle East to Europe. The announcement, released today by Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe (SHAPE), marks a major adjustment to the alliance’s non-combat advisory mission.

The relocation was confirmed by General Alexus Grynkewich, Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), who thanked the Republic of Iraq and Allied nations for assisting in the safe movement of personnel out of the country.

Continuity from Naples

While personnel have departed Iraqi soil, NATO has emphasised that the mission itself is not being terminated.

  • Remote Operations: NATO Mission Iraq will now continue its work from Joint Force Command Naples in Italy.
  • The Mission Mandate: NMI remains a non-combat, advisory, and capacity-building mission. It is designed to assist Iraq in building more transparent and effective security institutions to combat terrorism and prevent the resurgence of Daesh.

The “posture adjustment” follows a series of regional security escalations that have increasingly impacted mission hubs in Iraq. No doubt this decision was made with the safety and security of personnel remaining the paramount priority,
