The King’s Royal Hussars (KRH) have showcased their latest tactical innovations and combat readiness to their Colonel-in-Chief, Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, during a visit to Salisbury Plain.
The visit took place during Exercise Iron Cyclone, a four-week intensive training program designed to prepare the Regiment for its upcoming deployment on a NATO mission in Estonia. The training is focused on sharpening the “competitive edge” required to deter adversaries in the modern European security landscape.
Integrating CEMA and Drone Technology
During a two-hour inspection of specialist stands concealed within remote woodblocks, HRH was briefed on how the armoured regiment is evolving. A key focus of the demonstration was the coordination of traditional heavy armour with modern digital battlefield capabilities, including:
- CEMA (Cyber and Electromagnetic Activities): Utilising cyber systems to combat enemy electronic threats.
- Counter-UAS: Demonstrating new abilities to find and neutralise Unmanned Aerial Systems (drones).
- Night Operations: Explaining tactical shifts in how the Unit moves, shoots, and fights under the cover of darkness.
The Estonian Mission
Major Alex Walch, Officer Commanding C Squadron KRH, emphasised that the visit allowed the Regiment to display equipment and tactics introduced since the Princess Royal’s last visit in September 2024.
“We were able to explain how we are looking at how we disperse, move, shoot, and fight,” Major Walch stated. The integration of tanks, infantry, and drones, underpinned by electromagnetic spectrum dominance, is central to the Regiment’s role in the NATO mission.
A Half-Century of Leadership
The visit also marked a significant milestone, as Her Royal Highness has served as the Colonel-in-Chief of the King’s Royal Hussars for over 50 years. Soldiers expressed that her continued engagement and interest in the Unit’s technical progression remain a major morale booster as they prepare for overseas deployment.
