Defence Secretary John Healey has confirmed a significant boost to Gulf air defences during a high-profile visit to Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Bahrain.

The deployment is a direct response to a sustained campaign of over 3,500 missile and drone attacks launched by Iran against regional infrastructure and civilian sites. Secretary Healey announced that the UK is providing “Britain’s best” to protect the skies of its partners and ensure regional stability.

Surge in Defensive Capabilities

The new deployment, which begins this week, includes a comprehensive suite of land-based air defence equipment:

  • Sky Sabre Missile System: A Royal Artillery battery and specialised battlespace managers will operate this advanced system in Saudi Arabia.
  • Radars and Control Nodes: Additional detection teams and systems are being deployed to Bahrain and Kuwait.
  • Typhoon Jet Extension: The UK-Qatar joint Typhoon squadron mission at Dukhan Air Base has been officially extended to continue defensive flying operations.

Countering the Iranian Threat

Speaking from the Gulf, John Healey emphasised that the UK has been flying defensive missions since “day one” of the current conflict. The integration of UK Sky Sabre units into wider regional air defences is designed to neutralise incoming threats before they reach critical national assets.

“My message to Gulf partners is: Britain’s best will help you defend your skies. We are delivering further support by extending our UK jets in Qatar and deploying extra air defence teams and systems to Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Kuwait.” — Defence Secretary John Healey MP

Regional Strategic Support

During his visit, the Defence Secretary met with the Emir of Qatar and the King of Bahrain, as well as regional defence leaders. He praised the “courage and professionalism” of RAF pilots and Army personnel who have been conducting missions day and night over Qatar, Bahrain, Jordan, and the UAE.

This increase in military posture is intended to serve as collective defence for allies while preventing the UK from being drawn into a wider regional war.
